Spaceship Soundscape

This project was part of a Horror Sci-Fi sound design class in grad school.

I’m fascinated by how sounds signify different things depending on their context. This frees sound designers up to be pretty creative. Bacon sizzling? Rain? Hmm… On the other hand, it is also limiting. For example, punching someone in the gut will never get the sound that we expect to hear in the movies. Instead, it is up to the designer to create the illusion of a sound as we think it will sound: punch a slab of meat with a bare fist? Might work.

Playing with these ideas, I created a soundscape of an imaginary spaceship using ambient found sounds such as a squeaky bed and typewriter. Close your eyes and imagine you’re in Alien or something fun like that.
