Sitcom Suburbs

This project sets out to explore and reconstruct the post-war American sitcom suburb based on the spatial and mental models of the participatory televisual experience. Splicing together frames from popular sitcoms into panoramic landscapes and quicktime VR models, these views attempt to give a cohesive vision to what is otherwise constructed through vision and memory.

While this is neither client work nor a typical “interaction design” project, I include it in my portfolio because it’s a fun exploration of a pre-internet era mass produced user experience. Cognitive function/interaction is just as important for us as experience practitioners to look at as physical interactions and pathways.

This project was originally presented at Northwestern University’s School of Communication in the Screen Cultures department in 2005.
